Fuel Pump Relay Continues

I've got the VP 5.0 GL PEFS with the fuel issues. As posted before, I pinpointed the relay by hot wiring plug after boat quit running. I replaced it with an automotive relay and it failed. I blamed moisture since it wasn't sealed around connectors. I've now replaced it with a marine relay that has sealed connectors and it has failed. These 'failed' relays will work after some (cool down?) time however.

One factor that we've noticed is that every time boat has stopped running due to no fuel, it has been after running awhile then sitting for about an hour with engine off. We fire it back up and withing a couple of minutes it stalls. I assume pump isn't running at all after this startup and boat is only running on fuel in line/carb.

What typically causes relays to fail, especially just temporarily? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Fuel Pump Relay Continues

We now have further confirmation to support the "relay fails after running then sitting off awhile" factor. Yesterday we had the boat on the water for a few hours. We sat a few times but never shut it off. We had no issues. This is the 2nd time we've done this since the 1st relay failed. It has (temporarily) blown the fuel pump relay every time we've ran it awhile then sat off awhile.

Re: Fuel Pump Relay Continues

Hi

This is a long-shot and is something you probably thought of long ago,
but just on the off-chance you haven't . . . . . .

I have a 430B and the two relays are rated at 40amps each. Aftermarket
relays are sold as direct replacements for the Volvo relay, but are rated at
30amps. Volvo did not arbitrarily choose 40amps and if I were to buy an
aftermarket relay, I would make sure it is rated the same as the original.

Your replacement relay is probably correct but, if you have a relay rated
less than was originally spec'ed, it could very well fail before the main
circuit breaker/fuse (whichever you have) trips.

I know this doesn't explain the other circumstances you explain, but just a thought.

I have had the same problem. Boat starts fine and runs fine but if I drive it for awhile and get it to warm up. As in 170 or so. And then park if for 30 mins or more. It did the same as yours start the boat drive it 100 yards maybe and it runs out of gas. So I did all the relay stuff and ignition test. After all the changes go back to the lake, same ole crap. Runs great all day park to swim for a bit. Get in boat and go till bowl goes dry and blah blah blah. Pain in the butt to get started again. Now for the good news. I took the carb bowl off and changed the needle and seat. And boom. All fixed. The needle was soft and when it would get warmed up and sit it would stick shut hence the running out of gas the only way to unstick it was the constant pumping the throttle So try changing the needle and seat. It sure fixed mine.
By the way I am running a volvo 4.3L with a 2bbl
