HI,
been trying to get a 6 hp outboard Johnson motor running that i think is about a 1976. I can start it and keep it running, but only if i keep squeezing the primer bulb. I tried using a different tank and also tried using a newer primer bulb and yes the vent was open. I was suspicious of the fuel pump so I tried to switch a fuel pump from a 9.9 hp that i had. Unfortunently when removing the 9.9 fuel pump I dropped it and am not sure I got it back together right. I've been trying to find a detailed diagram of the fuel pump which I believe is part number 0388685.
Was also wondering how good does the compression have to be on an outboard in order to create a good enough vacuum to make the fuel pump work right. A new fuel pump costs over 80 dollars so would like to first find a good diagram that shows how to put the whole thing back together including the part that is held together by the two screws. I'm also trying to find a thermostat cover and gasket and thermostat for this motor if you have any used parts. You can email me direct at jake331@charter.net This motor has really been frustrating me.
i tried testing the fuel pump with disconnecting the line to the carburator. It didn't seem to pump hardly at all unless i used the primer bulb.
