1983 150 Merc. How often do you replace the check valves as a matter of preventive maintenance?

The kit is cheap, has good instructions, and the whole job takes about 10 minutes....
Maintainence is ALWAYS better too often than not often enough....
Annually or every 50 running hours is the recommendation from Merc (I think!)

at least every 3 season.
like TXshorty says,
on a car it will leave ya walking, on a 2 stroke outboard it can take out the crank and pistons and leave ya paddling.
and at the rebuild the fuel pump kit, like water pumps and t-stats and pressure diaphrams, it all cost the same ya just add more parts and labor.

I was curious as they don't include them with the fuel pump kit. I don't know if they have ever been replaced but I think I'll put it to the top of my list.

if you have the oblong pump and the round metal cased check valves they normally last a long long time. the pulse diaphrams are rather shortlived.
in the case of some oil injected models a leaking diaphram will flood certain cylinders with raw fuel and make the oil/fuel ratio to lean for proper lubrication and a weak diaphram may lean out the air/fuel ratio creating piston failure.

Thanks for the info. I put a kit in about every other year but it occured to me I have never done anything with the check valves. Anyway, they will be in later this week. Certainly can't hurt.
