I took my new 50hp ETEC back to the dealer. It kept shuting off on me in the river. The bulb was bad, so they replaced the bulb. No codes were given when they hooked it up. They ran it in the test pool this morning and it ran rough and would keep shutting off. Still no codes. They got to investigating and found out that the fuel pump (not lift pump) wasen't working. So, needless to say, I probably won't get to go on a planned fishing trip this weekend! This motor had 3.2 hours on it. Any ideas why the pump would go out? Do you think that the bulb messing up and starving the pump of fuel would cause the pump to mess up?

Sorry to hear of your problem. I know zip about E-TECS, but I was wondering if you disconnected the fuel supply to it while it was running?

I would guess if the pump went bad during the first few hours, then it either have something wrong with it(the reason it has a warranty) or something in the fuel fouled it.

If you bought it from a good dealer, then you're still going to make your trip, even if delayed a few hours.

If you bought it from a bad dealer, well... you'll be the first to know...

The dealer is my mother's uncle and the two mechanics are my cousin and another uncle. So, I feel pretty good about it. They have been in the business a long time. I believe it was just a defective injector pump. Lets hope so. The mechanic as on the phone with BRP tech services and got another one shipped asap. I just hope it gets delivered and installed tomorrow. I put new Eagle GPS/fishfinder combo on it and I'm itching to try it out.

I'm hip. I got a new trolling motor, and the lake is still 35 degrees. Sun was out, so it won't be long now.

remove fuel pump and look at connectors where fuel line goes in i have seen some d i pumps where this area gets full of crap (not sure if its manufacturing debris or crud from boats fuel system) any way this crap could be causing your problem
just a thought and good luck

Re: Fuel pump on brand new Etec gone bad

Well, the injector pump came in from BRP today and it was put on. I took it for a spin in the river today and it ran great. The fuel bulb was bad and cut off fuel to the pump. I guess the pump burned up. The tech guy from BRP said that the lift pump should have been able to keep supplying fuel to the motor even though the injector pump went out. I guess techies don't know it all.

So now I'm turning 5850 rpms which is perfect. However, I'm only getting about 33mph. And this is with a 50hp etec on a 16' skiff. I'm dissapointed at the speed (power). I thought the E-tecs were supposed to have more power than that. A friend has a 17' skiff with a 40hp Tohatsu and it is getting 35mph. Any ideas???

thanks,
Chris

Put a couple of people in both boats and you will see much less drop off on the E-tec than the Tohatsu. Difference in hulls can make the difference as well. 2 MPH on pitot speedometers proves nothing as they are notoriously inaccurate.

Where's your AV plate in relation to the bottom of the boat. If the motor is sitting down too far it will reduce performance. A good start is level with or slightly above the bottom. I am assuming you have tried trimming the motor to tweak the speed. I have a small 15' skiff (deep vee) with an older 50hp on it and can top 40 no problem.

My motor is sitting perfect. The cavitation plate is 1/4" above the bottom of the boat. I have the motor on a Carolina Skiff Semi V 16'. The prop is the correct pitch. I'm getting the right rpm's. I've been using a gps for speed.

you could try to raise it up one notch & see what happens. Raise it until you get ventilation in turns then drop it back down. (BTW my plate is around an inch above the keel.

Go out and race your buddy, maybe he isn't using GPS. 33mph on a 16' with a 50 sounds about right to me. Do what the guys said above and by playing around you might get another 1-2mph.
