fuel pump on 65 hp. mercury

I was reading some of the posts on retrofitting some motors to a fuel pump. I suspect the original pump on my '65 merc. 65 h.p. is weak, and was wondering if anyone has any insight to putting on some kind of new pump, electric or otherwise, on it and get good results. Right now the setup is one hose from tank through a primer bulb to a small pump (approxitely 1 1/2" square and 1/2 or 3/4" thick), then to the carbs. Is that the pump, and can it be relpaced with say an electric fuel pump like from a car? Any suggestions?

Yes, that is the pump... If your pump is ailing why not repair it?... It's very simple to repair, if the parts are avalible...<br /><br />After looking around a bit on the web for a fuel pump repair kit for your 65' I see why you might be in need of a fuel pump as repair kits do not seem to be readily avalible for a motor of that vintage....<br /><br /> Electric fuel pumps <br /><br />If you go with an electric pump (which I do not advise BTW), try to find one with low pressure (4psi or less) but high volume and it needs to be a "MARINE" pump because of safty issues...

Marv,<br />don't know if this will help you, but NAPA auto parts catalog has the fuel pump kit listed as: part # 18-7807 for a 3 Cyl 65 HP.<br />Part # 18-7804 for serial numbers between:<br />1542754-2803561 65HP

Marvc,Your pump should work fine with a rebuild.<br />Be sure the system is sound,all connections and<br />connectors working right.Not sucking air etc.<br /> Check that tank vent.Sometimes the pump pulse port will get restricted causing it to be weak.<br /> Check with the guys at Johns Old Mercury Web Site at:www.pfs-ware.com or Grubbs Marine<br />at: www.oldmercs.com.Grubbs specializes in repair and restoration of old mercs and I believe they have parts too. Johns site has a good forum and lots of links.

Thanks so much snapperbait, ricjdb1boat, and everyone for your very helpful info and web sites. I will also check out my local napa store for help also. For the price i found on the website, I'll try to just order from them if possible, and parts are available for my year. Your right, there is not much to these pumps, so can do it myself. I do suspect it may be sucking airin somewhere in the fuel system,probably between the pump and carbs as I put on all new line from front of motor to tank. Also cleaned tank good first. I still need to get a spark tester and new plug wires, but that is going to be a while off as it's too cold to be messing on it now. Thanks again
