I put a fuel pump kit in my '88 100 hp 4 cyl Merc about a month ago but I am having what seems to be a leak into the pulse port. This was my first fuel pump rebuild I'm ashamed to say. I bought a Sierra kit which turned out not to be the correct one but I modded it to work. The problem with the kit I received was it had no holes in one of the gaskets for the oil injection so I cut some into it.
One of the problems I encountered was in replacing the check valves. The holes were too small to insert the small plastic pins. Once again I improvised by making my own pins from small nails. That probably wasn't the best plan and I found out later that the holes need to be drilled out to fit the new plastic pins.
What keeps the plastic pins from vibrating loose? Maybe the holes need to be drilled out to exacting specs so the pins fit super snug?
My motor acts and smells like it's getting too much fuel now. How much vacuum comes from the pulse port? Is it only vacuum or is it an alternating vacuum and pressure? Can this be over powering the pump somehow? Is there a chance the pump pressure is too high for the carbs?
I just ordered a new QuickSilver kit. Anybody have any tips to make sure the fuel pump works correctly? I really think this fuel pump has never worked very well. I'm toying with the idea of converting over to an electric pump to get rid of this mickey mouse design.
