how can you tell if your fuel pump is working properly. my 60 johnson vro works fine in the drivway with the muffs but seems to bog down when you open it up on the water. seems to be a lack of fuel. new tank and fuel line. vent is open.any ideas.

Re: fuel pump issues

Easy way is to pump the fuel primer bulb and see if it picks up. Otherwise, you could get a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up inline between the pump and the carbs...Some just take the pump output hose at the carbs off and put it in a container and run the engine briefly to see if it's pulsing out fuel....

Re: fuel pump issues

An engine will run perfectly well with no load on it so that's why it appears to be ok in the driveway. Launch the boat and when the engine bogs, squeeze the primer bulb a few times. If the engine seems to come to life, you have a fuel delivery problem. While the fuel pump may be the culprit, you could also have some carb related problems.

Battery...will it ever come up to WOT? Or does it just bog and do nothing?

Re: fuel pump issues

Got the pump taken off. took it apart and checked everything and cleaned it all is fine. when I was diconnecting the lines the air pump line from the engine was loose on the clamp, so loose I just hauled the line off easily. there seems to be a few loose clamps, I was wondering may this be the trouble, everything inside the pump was o.k. please advise. thanks

Re: fuel pump issues

could be, engine can start and run well on muffs because ther eis not back pressure on the exhaust. give it a run after you tighten the hoses. if it still doing it . PROPERLY clean and reassemble the carbs with a new rebuild kit and quit say it runs so good, cause it doesn't. then take the manual and do the linc and sinc. exactly as the manual says. any deviation and you are wasting your time and will have to start from the beginning. when you have done this post your results. you are asking advice and not taking it. these people know a H--- of alot more about the motor and how it works, than you do.

Re: fuel pump issues

Could very well be the pulse line was sucking air and causing the pump not to work to capacity under load. Had you done the tests above(Pump primer bulb), you would know for sure real quick.Try it in the water first, then clean the carbs if that doesn't work. One thing at a time...

Re: fuel pump issues

thanks for your patience guys. I also discovered that the pulse limiter valve is broken. it's not a one way valve anymore, so i'm replacing this as well. Once I get it back in the water for a test I will let you know. Thanks.

Re: fuel pump issues

Hello guys, had the boat out on the weekend and everything seems fine, one question, how much fuel should be in the inline fuel filter while the engine is running

Re: fuel pump issues

Don't expect it to be full. Mine on the horizontal angel is usually about 1/3 to 1/2 full or around there...

Re: fuel pump issues

Still got trouble so i took the carbs off and i'm going to rebuild them. was just wondering how to get the plugs out of the carbs and to totally disassemble it. Can't find any books around here and it will take approximately 3 weeks to get one. if anyone has any literature i would greatly appreciate it. its for a 87 60hp 3cyl johnson. Thanks.
