I have a 83 bayliner with a aq125. the fuel pump has a weep hole on the side. there is a consistant drip of fuel from the pump. It is the same amount at idle as it is at plane. Any idea what causes this and how do I stop it?
Thanks

HOLY GAS FUMES BATMAN!

1) The fuel pump's bladder is going bad and has a hole in it.

2) A "Marine" fuel pump should NOT have a weep hole. A proper marine pump should have a fitting on the bottom with a clear hose that goes to the carb.

Sounds like somebody (hopefully not you) previously put an automotive fuel pump on there.

You are lucky to still be in one piece.

Actually it is not a weep hole. it looks like a fitting for a vacuum. I have not had the boat long and am learning more every day. I assume the hose should go from there to the similar fitting on the carb. what type of hose?

It is generally clear hose so you can see if there is any fuel in it. (There isn't supposed to be). You obviously need to replace your fuel pump with a new one as soon as possible. There is a recent post here on the board where a member had an explosion due to a fuel leak onboard.

You should have a clear hose (so you can see if any fuel is leaking) going from there to the top of the carb. Somebody has removed it.

Like I said, your fuel pump is bad. Get a replacement, and then replace that hose.

Get you a factory service manual if you plan on doing things yourself. That way you can see the system diagrams etc. and make life easier. :)

Older automotive fuel pumps had weep holes.
Tells you when the diaphram was bad..
Change your oil too..it could have gas in it as well..
Glad you didn't go BOOM!!!

Open engine cover, vent it out well, replace fuel pump, replace "sight tube" from pump to carb, and continue to learn and ask questions.

When I got my boat, the pump diaphram was bad and fuel was in the sight tube... it seems to be something that happens to boats for sale :)

I would recommend a marine survey to find and hopefully fix any other issues before you become a candidate for the "Darwin Awards"
www,darwinawards.com

I might get kicked off the forum for this one, but here goes. Please sell your boat before you kill someone. You are no different than a man with a gun walking down the street pointing it at someone. Starting a boat engine with a KNOWN GAS LEAK is ONE of the most Stupid things I've ever heard. May I take out a million dollar life insurance policy on you?

That's why he is here, asking about it... better than the boater who continues to do wrong in blindness.

You came to the RIGHT place, at the RIGHT time.

Take care of this issue, continue to read the forum posts, obtain a manual.... and don't sell your boat because it lacks a sight tube! Good Grief what a worthless suggestion!

Kudos for catching it, it's a deadly problem. Don't underestimate liquid fuel in an enclosed engine compartment left to vaporize, we'll see the mushroom cloud in Arizona!

Repeat, don't even turn over the engine until this is fixed. Post your engine serial number and even a picture, and someone here will have the fuel pump model number you need to order.

In the meantime, open up the boat and let it air out.

bamadave...I think its more stupid to intimidate people so that they don't ask questions like this.

Re: Fuel pump blowing fuel

Bruce, It's not my intention to intimidate anyone. Someone that does not know the difference not to start an engine AND to continue to go have fun on the water in his new toy when they KNOW there is a fuel leak, should be ashamed of themself. As much fun as boating is, there is a quote I learned 35 years ago when I earned my pilots license. Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of ANY carelessness, incapacity or NEGLECT. I apply this to boats as well. I'm assuming you have not witnessed a boat exploding or I believe you would not say I'm intimidating someone for their carelessness. I worked at a marina where, on a very busy weekend, there was a family with a new USED boat they had just launched, when I heard the explosion. After the fire was put out, 3 people had died, the father and 2 children. The wife is reminded everyday of her husbands carelessness everytime she looks in the mirror, as well as 2 other innocent people on the dock. The mother stated her husband knew the fuel tank had a leak but stated it would be o.k. if he didn't fill the tank completely up.
My point is he did Nothing when he realized there was a potential for disaster and did not do anything about it. I'm sorry for the anal attitude I have, but I blame the guy that killed his family.
Thanks go to my deceased father for teaching me Common Sense.

Bamadave... so one mistake and he should be shunned forever?

Whether we have witnessed an explosion in irrelevant.

Telling him he should sell his boat and he's pointing a loaded gun at strangers ISN'T intimidation.... whatever.

Find something useful to post next time.

Re: Fuel pump blowing fuel

Let me clarify something. this happened this past weekend. I think I blew a head gasket, when I pulled the cover to check it out, I noticed the leak. I removed the cover and turned on the blower and eased back to the boat ramp. Granted I should have tried to have someone tow me back. I pulled the boat on the trailer with a rope as to not use the engine and cut my trip short by a day to get the boat home. Bamadave thank you the insightfull and colorfull comments. Everyone else thanks for the help, I knew nothing about the hose. So far this has been a very helpful sight.
