Hi,

I recently purchased a 1996 kawasaki zxi 1100. I put a brand new top end on it and when i tried to start it, it just backfires. I then realized it was a timing issue so i replaced the sheared woodruff key on the flywheeel. When I tried to start it next it woud run with starter fluid and then crap out. Are there fuel pumps on the carbs that need to replaced? Could that be the problem and how much are they to replace?

starting fluid? ack! bad stuff to use in a 2-stroke motor.

ZXi's are known for having choke issues - when I had one, I had to choke the engine darn near every time I started it.

a better option than the choke is to remove it and replace it with a primer system.

you can get the entire primer system from a Hot Products dealer for a reasonable price (less the $50 I think)

If you don't know the maintenance history of the ski, then yes, carb rebuild & fuel system cleanout.

there is an obvious fuel filter next to the carbs, also in the fuel tank, where the on and reserve pickups are, there are two filters on the end of those tubes, i've seen theese clogged up. they have been in there for 14 years, i'd look at them also.
When you do your carbs set the pop off at 22 pounds and it'll improve cold starting and bottom end punch.
