I posted on a subject last season that was never really cleared up, here's the rundown.

1996 Wellcraft

4.3 LX Alpha1

I had some starting problems when boat would sit for a while (approx 2 days). Gas was not getting to the carb. This problem would require me to take of the tank supply line and use an external source to get gas up the line. Once it was started, no problems at all. I was suspecting the anti-syphon valve and was instructed by the local mechanic to "POP THAT DAMN BALL OUT". I did and basically was problem free, for a while anyway.

I did have to repeat the starting with an external source a couple more times over the season, so I know that didn't fix the problem.

The big question is, so I need a new fuel pump....or should I try something less costly first?

BTW I am replacing the anti-syphon valve before I'm on the water this season, I realize it's there for a reason.

Try getting an external tank and hooking it up.
That will tell ya if there are problems in the original tank or lines..

Tallman

My 4.3LX has done this since I put it together... I Still haven't bothered to figure out Why....
I added a 3/8s primer bulb(for an outboard) to the fuel line, Just ahead of the fuel pump... a couple squeezes,+ it fires right up....
I know, I know,... I'm attacking the syptoms, rather than the problem, But, It's worked for 4 years now....

Hey Bondo,

Thanks for the reply. So you never fully investigated what was going on? The bulb idea is fine if that's what I have to do.....shouldn't be too hard to install. I've heard in the past that the electric fuel pumps from that year (95-96) were "not all that great" don't know if that's accurate or not.

Like I said once it's running and for several days after that it's fine, but every now and then it acts up. I should make note to see if it happens nore often at low tank levels. I did take the hose out of the tank and found no obstructions. Oh well, some things to work on again this season.

try a pressure test on the fuel pump. sb about 5-7 psi. also there are fuel filters in the carb on some engines if this has one get one with an anti drain back valve, ac delco gf470 if its a shot filter or gf471 for a long filter. since it sounds like it stays running after you get it fired up your pump should be ok. the only other prob could be you getting air somewhere reclamp any suspect hose clamps starting at the tank and work you way to the engine. use worm drive clamps not spring type or pull ties. good luck ya mon

Yuck, better get that fixed. I don't know what's wrong (probably the pump, it shouldn't bleed back), but I wouldn't want a primer bulb in my engine compartment.
