Hello,

I just swapped over from twin V4 Johnson 140's to a single 225 Evinrude. When I go to start the motor..I'm not hearing the click that I should when I go to use the fuel primer solenoid at the key switch. If I look at the volt meter on the dash..I see that it does go down with a ouch of the key like it's sending the electricity to the solenoid...but nothing at the solenoid. The red lever is in correct position. Other than the 20 amp fuse..is there any fuses that would cause this? I'm at a loss right now as to the next step. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
D1

Re: Fuel primer solenoid

I think the obvious next step would be to check and see if the solenoid is getting power when you push in the key. Just because you can't here it doesn't mean it's not activating.

Re: Fuel primer solenoid

I agree. Test for power at the solenoid. Connect a 12V test light to the positive on the solenoid and ground the test light and press the key. If the light comes on, we know we have power to the solenoid. My manual says to press and hold the primer for 15-20 seconds on a cold start.
Mine is a Johnson 225 Ocean Runner 1996 model.

Re: Fuel primer solenoid

your manual is correct, but key has to be in the run position, not off. disconnect wire at solenoid, and connect to it, and ground.

Re: Fuel primer solenoid

Just thought I'd update the thread. I did as instructed with my multimeter and I saw that the solenoid was bad. The manual says it should read 5.5 ohms +- 1.5 ohms. Mine was all over the place never giving a consistent reading. I took it off and took it apart and it had some rust on the bottom spring that controls the needle. I had another solenoid so I tested it, and it was 6.5 ohms, it works just fine. Where would you suggest to find another one without paying the new price of $130 to 150 dollars? I really appreciate all the help.....this site and the manual are the only way to go.

Thanks again,
