fuel primer bulb

im new to boating and just took boat out to lake,need help with a starting problem, its a 1984 60 HP Johnson sea horse
I need to continuosly be pumping bulb for it to stay running, is there a specific way it needs to be mounted, there is no fuel leaks that I can see, so am not sure if there is any thing causing a vacuum leak, any help would be appreciated

Sounds like you are doing the job the fuel pump should be taking care of.....have you checked its operation?

Your fuel pump obviously isn't working. Sounds like you already know the possible causes. Yes it needs to be mounted right side up (pointy end up). But I doubt that is your problem here. ANY leaks between the pump and the fuel level in the tank will kill the pump's operation. So will an obstruction of some kind. Best borrow a known good portable gas tank and hose and see if that works. If not, you probably have a bad pump. Or a clogged filter on the pump inlet.
