fuel/oil problem? OR something bigger?

I recently bought a 1993 - 24’ Sea Ray Laguna with a 200 hp Mercury offshore OB with 500 hrs. Put the boat in on Sat and after a few cranks – started right up. Ran at slow speed around creek with no problem and then headed out into the Rappahannock to fish for a bit. 2 hours later had trouble starting – finally started but had to keep heavy throttle to keep from stalling. Every time I tried to back off on the throttle to get in gear it would stall. After about an hour was able to get it in gear and back to the dock. Next day – started the engine and had same problems – lots of exhaust and rpms up and down. I figure the boat had been sitting a while and could potentially be moisture in gas? Replace fuel separator and add stabilizer and idle for about a half an hour -it cleans up. Take boat for a run and all is well. No overheating, in and out of gear fine, idling smooth… run for about a half an hour and slow down to come into creek and…oil alarm goes off and engine sputters out. Any ideas? Could oil be old? Could screen in oil reservoir be clogged? Float stuck? OR is this something bigger? Will be heading back this weekend to try and resolve. Thanks for any feedback.

Re: fuel/oil problem? OR something bigger?

Im sure you will get better help than I can give but here goes. Some alarms go off just to indicate
oil is getting low usually an intermitent beeping.
Dont think it would stop motor. And I dont think you have done any damage. If you plan to have the boat for awhile and will be working on it
you should have a ser.manual and maybe even an owners manual. There is a tab at the top of the page or EBAY,Amazon.com,Ken Cook Marine Publications at:www.kencook.com Or even the library. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply steelespike . The reservoir is full. I added about 2 gal to it. I will definitely be picking up a manual thanks for the recommendation.
