Yes, 50:1 is correct. If you are asking if you can get by with less oil in the mix, the answer is no. The sheen of oil on the water when you stop is pretty normal for those old Mercs. I had a 1967 650 and it did it everytime I stopped. It only takes a drop or two of oil/fuel mix in the water, to make it look like a huge slick. These older motors tended to do this. It's just a bit of unburned fuel leaking out the exhaust. Nothing to worry about. It's normal. Stay with the 50:1 mix or you really will have problems. Good old engine ya got there...

I would use 40:1 minimum in that motor. A little extra isn't going to hurt anything. It was designed to use something like 32:1 or richer.

I use 32:1 in my '74 inline 6. I just opened it up and the inside is literally spotless. 32:1 will NOT do anything but add extra protection...

I have the "68" 650 four that i inherited from my grandfather and ran 50 to 1 in her for three years averaging 50 or more hours a week and she has not missed a beat.<br />she's gonna hit the water next week for another season of mercury fun.

I use 50.1 , I was afraid if i ever did go over the 50.1 a little it might damage something. and the gas /oil in the water when i stop it worried me, but like always you guys are a big help, thanks a lot.
