Still setting up that Merc 9.8. I bought some Pennzoil 100% synthetic 2 cycle oil at Walmart yesterday. My 32 year old manual says to use Formula 50-D Quicksilver 2-cycle oil at 50:1. If that's not available use a high quality 2-cycle oil at 25:1.

What should I mix the Pennzoil at. With my old dirt bikes we always errored on the side of more oil. Worst case the plugs didn't last as long.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Fuel Mixture ratio

Would run same as the quicksilver 50:1. If breaking in engine run 25:1.

Re: Fuel Mixture ratio

Rob J,

I think you have the right idea. (To err on the side of more oil). Most of the time I will add a bottle of oil meant for six gallons of gasoline, then add 5 to 5-1/2 gallons of gas. I have been doing this to all the outboards I've owned since the sixties, and it has never been a problem.

My 30 year 115 Merc has perma-gap spark plugs that are easy to clean.

Best Regards, Gold Bear ;)

Re: Fuel Mixture ratio

hello.
In Rochester there is an outboard repair man -Bill Mayer-who has worked in this profession since the forties. He is in his late seventies now.The thing he told me about fuel mix is that he never saw a fried engine without a waterpump problem until people started changing their mix from 1:32 to 1:50.Those are my two bits of opinion.

Like the 2 above post's state a little more oil won't hurt the engine, you just have to clean/chg. the plugs more often and clean the carbs.
