I would like some one to "do the math" for me showing the relative cost between Diesel and gasoline taking into account the fuel cost difference and the efficiency of Diesel vs gasoline.

As an aside, since a Diesel is basically a multifuel engine, is it safe to burn gasoline in a diesel and if so, considering gasoline has less energy than fuel oil, what would be the cost savings/debit?

If you want to keep your diesel, don't put gas in it.

Diesels are not that Multifuel.
What diesel exatly are you talking about?

Basically, you put gasoline in a diesel, kiss the engine good bye!

Unless you own one of these (and we do, pic taken a few minutes ago) you do NOT have a multifuel.
Our deuce will happily burn gas, diesel, used motor oil, and any combo of same.

Now I remember why I don't live in Ohio any more, that in the winter, and 99? temps with 99% humidity in the summer.

PS: Born and raised in central Ohio, West Jefferson mostly.

Hey is that the old multi-fuel duece and a half !! When on gas they lack power. I have always wanted an old 5T or 2-1/2T they will go anywhere!

If you run a regular diesel on gas you will damage it.

On www.fueleconomy.gov they give cost to drive 25 miles..... you can plug in your own gas prices too for most any vehicle less than a 3/4 ton.

Your multifuel engine in the deuce & 1/2 will run on gas or other fuels, but the service life of the injection pump will be shortened using thin fuels without lubicant additives. When they were built gas had a lot more lubricity than it does now, just something to think about.

Pretty close to us...
Yeah the weather here sucks for sure.
Been -35 (actual air temp) and +110
Humans really aren't designed for those temperature swings ;)
Plan on making our escape to costal TX as soon as son is outta college.

We have had a blast w/ the old deuce (1970 Kaiser M35 A2).
Son learned to drive in it.

Re: Fuel $/mile

Just an example:
My '99 Mercedes ML430 gets 20mpg on premium gas. At $3.40/gal that is $.17/mile.

My '96 Mercedes E300D diesel gets 35mpg at $3.50. That is $.10/mile.

Used to drive one in the military. Running on gas does reduce power but they love diesel. When we absolutely had no choice to run gas we had to add 5 gallons of motor oil to the tank for lubrication.

The math is very easy. (Cost per gallon) divided by (miles per gallon) equals (cost per mile).

So if fuel is $3.20 a gallon and your truck gets 15 miles per gallon you get this:
($3.20) / (15) = 0.21 dollars per mile. Or 21 cents per mile.

Re: Fuel $/mile

Or, you can just use the non taxed farm fuel from the barrel in your yard to power your diesel car and then save lots of money. The problem is it's been a long time since a person was able to buy a affordable diesel car. :(

A lot of farmers did this back in the 80's. Needless to say there are very few, due to wear and age ,80's BMW's, Rabbits, or Oldsmobile's still on the road today . And, the government started to catch on to this and now puts dye in the fuel so they can tell who is running highway fuel and who is not. You have green (also called clear) fuel for highway use and red fuel for farm and industrial use.
