Fuel Leak??

Two questions.... I rebuilt the carbs. When I trim the engine all the way up fuel leaks out of the carbs. Would that indicate a float problem? The new carb kit did not have new floats just needle and seat. Next there seems to be fuel washed right behind the fuel pump. When I run it on muffs it doesn't show any indication of a leak but when I get home from a day on the lake there's fuel around there.

Re: Fuel Leak??

pinhole in the fuel pump diaphram will leak out that little hole in the back...if you're convinced it's not from your dripping carbs...it'll get worse until you can see it at idle and when you pump the primer bulb. easy rebuild. might want to inspect the fuel lines first could have a high-pressure leak, easier fix, if they're pretty old just replace 'em anyway.

carb = needles aren't seating, possible float level misadjustment

I figured if it was from the carbs it would stay inside the airbox and leak out the bottom which it appears to be

Originally there was cable ties on all the connections but they did not seem to be very tight so I put hose clamps on them. Is there any reason why someone would use cable ties instead of a hose clamp?

They come from the factory with cable ties...there's a particular type they use that provides full 360º closure...I use the regular kind, but if you can't get one closed up tight, you can put two - just rotate the 2nd one 180º around from the first. Can't think of a reason why hose clamps won't be fine, though.

...bet you're right about the leak...I never noticed mine 'til it took all the adhesive off the wiring harness tape...

Just in case you don't see a rebuild kit part no. for your pump...manual for my '79 3-cyl says the pump is not repairable...I used a 1978 kit...all the same parts...fit perfectly...

Re: Fuel Leak??

thanks for the info. I talked to a mechanic yesterday and he figured that i wouldn't be able to get a rebuild kit for the pump.
