I have a 1990 Johnson 60 HP 2 stroke outboard. It starts OK but idles roughly with misfires where the engine seems to cough and belch a bit of smoke. If you lower the idle lever on the throttle to prepare to shift into drive then it will give a big cough and die. It will re-start OK but acts the same and I can never get it idling properly or running in drive.
I took the carbs off and cleaned them and they were spotless inside and the same problem persists. Yesterday I started it and noticed fuel leaking from around the red lever that switches from manual prime to run.
The 4 screws on the black plastic square plate near the red lever were a bit loose so I tightened them but the fuel leak still occurs. I noticed that the base of the red lever is cracked. Fuel squirts out from around the lever when you prime by pushing the start key in and also a bit when one of those coughs occur. The red lever is pointing back in the "run" position.
What parts do I need to replace here and how do I de-pressurize the fuel system before taking the housing around the red lever apart?
Thanks a lot. I'm a novice at outboard repair.
