I was wondering if anyone knew why my fuel gauge would dart in the wrong direction when powered up. it normally rests on the E position when the power is turned off, but when i turn my boat on, it jumps to the left past E. The polarity wiring looks ok, could this just be a faulty sensor in the tank, and if so does anyone know how difficult it is to change it? Ty, u guys are the best

Re: Fuel Gauge

Is the tank empty? Is the bow of the boat facing downward in relation to the stern? What I'm getting at is if there is just a little bit of fuel in the tank and you point the bow downward, the fuel flows to the front of the tank and the sender says the tank is empty because the float is generally located more toward the rear of the tank. The float may have become fuel soaked and no longer floats. Remove the sender and check it. It should measure 0 - 240 ohms as you move the float arm up and down. If the float does not float, replace it wth anything that floats and is fuel resistant.

Re: Fuel Gauge

ty silvertip,

the bow of my boat is facing upwards since i have it in my driveway right now and there is about 40 liters of fuel in it for sure, unsure of how much the previous owner had b4 i bought it. I took the dash apart and jumped the sender wire to the ground on the gauge and read in a previous post on here that the gauge should jump to full when you do that, but it didnt. Does it sound like i have a faulty gauge maybe? In relation to the float that you spoke of, how do i get to it? I have a live well in between the 2 front seats, but i have no access to the tank there, and i cant seem to find any other way to get at it , any ideas about my year boat?

Re: Fuel Gauge

The fuel sender is located at the top of the fuel tank, generally toward the rear end of the tank. It is mounted to the tank with a gasket and screws. You will need to remove the floor or whatever else is in the way. The fuel gauge needs +12V and ground and the fuel sender needs a ground as well. Once you have access to it you can verify these and continuity of the wire from the sender to the gauge. If you have +12V and ground on the gauge, the sender is functional and grounded, the wire between the sender and gauge is good and it still doesn't work, you need a new gauge.
