Fuel gauge not working

Hi all,

My fuel gauge is not working properly and I can't seem to work out what it is;

Ignition on - guage full (regardless of sender float level)
Ignition off - guage empty (regardless of sender float level)

So I figured this was the sender and replaced it but problem still the same.

Does anyone have any other ideas / tests as I don't want to replace guage unless I'm sure!

Boat is 2009 Sea Ray 205 sport

Any advice appreciated!

my advice is that there is a wire broken somewhere along the way. Since you replaced the sender, I would check connections at the gauge, etc. etc.

Sounds like the ground might be loose or off since it buries the needle like that when current is supplied.

A loose ground or a broken wire does not peg the gauge. Only a full fuel tank or a short between the "S" terminal and ground will do that. Check the connections on the back of the gauge to ensure the wire or terminal on the "S" terminal of the gauge is not touching the ground terminal or the metal shell of the gauge (if the gauge is indeed metal). If that's ok, then check the wire on the sender to ensure it is not touching ground. An internal short in the gauge is possible. Remove the "S" terminal connection. If the gauge still pegs, the gauge is toast.

Dear all,

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look as soon as I can to try and pinpoint the problem.
Just another point I noticed which was when the sender unit float is moved up and down after I removed it from the tank there was a slight movement of gauge needle from the overfill position (hence why I thought the sender was inop)

Anyway I will try some more tests and see!
