Fuel Flow meters

I have a 1979 OMC marinized 350 Chevy with a mechanical diaphragm fuel pump. I recently installed a Standard Horizon FF-41 fuel flow meter. When I run the engine, the meter runs backwards. For instance, at idle it shows a 25 gal. per hr. fuel flow. At 2600 rpm, it shows 3.4 gals. per hr.I called Standard Horizon but they are stumped. Anyone else had this problem? Floscan requires a Gas Pulsation Damper for diaphragm fuel pumps. Could this apply to mine?
Thanks,
Gene

Re: Fuel Flow meters

Brailediver,
From my experience, most fuel flow meters have a flow meter connected somewhere in the fuel line flow system; perhaps you connnected the sensor in reverse order; if so, try reversing the sensor connection to the fuel system. If the sensor metering the flow of fuel is installed correctly, then the sensor wires to the meter may need to be reversed which deliver electrical impulses to the meter guage. Look at your installation manual and determine the correct sensor wiring connections to the meter, and the correct installation of the in line fuel flow sensor. This may help in determining the reversal of your guage readings. I hope this helps. Be safe.

Re: Fuel Flow meters

You most likely have this correct but just needed to start somewhere. Is the inline fuel flow sensor in the suction side of the fuel line, between the primary fuel filter and the fuel pump? Is the fuel flow sensor mounted with the fuel lines going in the bottom and out the top or is it lying flat and parallel to the fuel tank? The wires should be in a connector that cannot be plugged backwards, right?

Re: Fuel Flow meters

Can't put the plug in backwards, but you sure can put the sender in backwards.
Call their customer service line. They are really great about seeing that you are happy.
Captharv

Re: Fuel Flow meters

I have the transducer installed correctlt for flow, in a vertical orientation, on the suction side of the pump. It has me stumped. Manufacturer has no clue.

Re: Fuel Flow meters

I'm thinking we really don't know if it's the sender or gauge. But I'd ask them to give me a new sender and/or gauge. When I first got my SH FF 41, the sender wires (which are permanently attached to sender) were defective - they were cracked or something at the attachment point, therefore causing intermittant problems. With a phone call, SH sent me a new sender without even asking for the defective one in return.

Later the gauge itself went bad (leaked rain water into gauge) - they sent me a whole new set up, sender and gauge, although this time they had me send the gauge in first, and it took a while to make the exchange. It's worked perfectly since. (2 seasons).

Re: Fuel Flow meters

PS: I could wiggle the wires at the sender and see it was causing problems at the gauge - you might try that in your troubleshooting.
