I'm thinking that I am interested in a FF/WS for my 70hp-2-stroke Yamaha (19 gal. built in tank). Other boards I visit recommend Racor FF/WS. I like the idea of the models with the transparent globes at the bottom for viewing collected water. As I understand most with this feature also have drains for this water much like those found on heavy duty trucks. The capacity of the Racors with this feature far exceeds my needs but it seems the benefits would outweigh any derogatory affects, if any, the additional capacity might have. I'd like to hear anyones opinion who might have had experience or insight.

P.S. I noticed one retailer recommends NOT mounting the 320 model Racor in a "enclosed area". What would constitutes an enclosed area? I can't see surface mounting it out where it has the potential to be knocked or potentially catch ropes or lines.

Thanks

Moretoday,
I mounted a Racor 320 this summer and have had no negative effects. It does allow you to see if their is water in the bowl and it does have the drain. I have yet to have to drain it, as it has not accumulated any water yet. But it does seem handy and I would not be without some kind of Seperator, as I had a bad experience with water in the fuel last spring. If I had the filter then, I might have saved myself alot of grief. Not sure about the "Enclosed Area" Mounting deal. Don't see where it would hurt, unless the filter bowl or lines going to it broke.

Looking at the Racor site, I did notice this statment:

"Now, owners of inboard or outboard engines can get smoother operation and longer life - all in one easy spin onto existing filter heads. There's a choice of rugged, reusable see-thru bowl with self-venting drain, or a metal bowl with drain plug for inboard applications. Metal bowls are UL-listed and USCG accepted. See-thru bowls are recommended for outboard applications only."

So it looks like the see-thru bowl could cause potential problems in an enclosed area.

I have used the Racor on 3 boats, and would'nt use anything else.Mine were all mounted down in the bilge area. Just make sure all the fittings are tight and don't leak.
Make sure when you mount it that there's enough space under it to get a catch container under it when you drain the valve, or remove the filter.

I have also used Racor filters for several years with excellent results.Seems like the only thing they can't filter out is a bad(stale) tank of gas which I had the privelige to experience from a Marina  It leaves a brownish jelly at tube ends and does wonders for the carbs.I have my Racor mounted in the transom well in clear sight and access. The filter part of the unit should be replaced every season(maybe two)and the bowl is re-usable.Like Rick said, filters with plastic bowls(outboard)should NOT be mounted below decks or in bilge area.
