I believe most , if not all, are the same, with the exception of the Racor brand.

Merc's is different than OMC's, and some Volvo-Penta's use different ones still. Other brands may make replacements to fit ... such as Fram, etc.

There are also short and long filters w/same thread. I have to use the short one my configuration because of tight space. Check the box info, they will tell you if it for Merc or OMC. They run $6-8.00 depending on store. Racor runs $15-50. A Racor set up will last you a lifetime of treated right. They allow you to drain out the water instead of replacing the filter all the time.

Re: Fuel filter/water separator

Ok, maybe I've been lucky when buying mine. But none of the filters I have bought were labeled for a specific engine or filter base manufacturer. How come most of the ones in the megamall don't say what they will fit. And how would I know what brand filter base I have? All it has is some parts number cast into it?

So back to the original questions. No they aren't all the same. Each manufacturer will claim theirs is best. And the filters are not interchangable.

Life is too hard sometimes. Why do I bother having one? Probably have the wrong filter on it anyways. Guess I will rip it out and throw it away.
