Fuel filter warning

I've been chasing an intermittent high speed fuel problem in a 150 HP 2.4 for about a month. It turned out that the previous owner's mechanic had put in a cheap OEM fuel filter that looked good, seemed to be clear and passed the "blow" test. It just wouldn't let enough fuel through to run at WOT.

I shot several other minor fuel bugs out during the process, like a pinhole air leak in the suction line, and a slightly malformed check valve in the fuel pump. I finally installed a temporary fuel pressure gauge after the filter with the idea that if fuel pressure stayed up, it's a carb problem, if it drops, it's a delivery problem. (still)

It dropped. I replaced the fuel filter with the right Mercury filter, and it stays up to a solid 6 lbs. The old filter looks fine, it just won't deliver. Ma and I shredded the local lake for an hour testing it out.

It could easily have cost me a power head.

hope it helps

Re: Fuel filter warning

Appreciate your thoughtfulness (for the rest of us) John. I like your approach to troubleshooting and it obviously paid off.
