Fuel Deliveryy Problem?

Can someone help me get started? Last weekend I was out on the boat and after pulling anchor to come in, I pushed the throttle lever forward and the boat started to accelerate like normal. Then it seemed like it was stalling, surged again, stalled again several times. I pulled the lever back to neutral (single lever control) and the motor stalled. It started ok, but at full throttle the rest of the way to the dock the max I could get was 4000 rpm (normally runs about 5600). It seemed to be starved for fuel. The motor is a 1992 Johnson 100hp commercial 25" shaft. What should I do to eliminate potential problems and identify a fix?

start with the basic trouble shooting, compression check spark check on all 4 cylinders, record the results and post. spark should jump 7/16 inch.

As it turns out the problem was overheating, but the alarm did not sound. Replaced thermostats and it works ok now - but I have t ofind out why the overheat alarm did not sound.
