Fuel Consumption

I've an 16 1/2' 87 Crestliner Viking (Nordic) with an 88 70HP Mercury on it. I'm wondering what is normal fuel consumption for this configuration. The trip is about 30-40 minutes each way running about 36-3800 rpms. The round trip will have used almost all fuel in the tank, on empty , but with a slosh factor left. The tank is one of the standard QuickSilver portables, 25 litres I believe.

I'm not freaked by this, just puzzled. We used to run a 1990 18' Bayliner Capri Cuddy, with a 90HP Force. It would use a little more than 20 litres for the same trip in the same time.

I thought that the Crestliner would do better as it is about 400lbs lighter.

The mechanic said that the motor should be raised by two holes on the transom. Would this affect fuel consumption, or just the spray factor?

David

Re: Fuel Consumption

The more drag in the water, the more fuel you'll use. The cavitation plate should be even with or slightly above the bottom of the boat (reduce drag yet keep prop in water). Should decrease fuel consumption some although I don't know if you'll be able to measure it.
