fuel connection problem

the typical OEM connectors for my fuel , are not connecting! i have the '76 johnson 55 hp motor and the line to the fuel is not connecting to the motor the way it should. when I bring the female connector to the spot on the motor were it is suppose to go, and try to push it on the female connector , there is a "restriction" on the female connector, that has a 3\4" piece of metal next to the female connnector. any ideas?

Replace the connector. 4-5 bucks at Wally world.
