Fuel coming out of choke/air intake on carb...

For some reason I have fuel coming out of the choke/air intake on my carb, its on a 78 9.8 Merc. I have replaced the needle valve, all the gaskets, and the marina down the road said the float was good. What would cause fuel to come out of the choke? It cranks and runs on wide open throttle but at half throttle or lower it dies in about 5 seconds.

If you replaced the needle and seat, did you also adjust the float level? Bet you didn't, or if you did, you did it wrong. If the float level is wrong the fuel level in the bowl gets too high and runs over because the needle and seat aren't closing. And then there is the possibility you installed the needle upside down.

Sounds like it's assembled wrong.Serial# model etc.With out the #s not positive what were looking at.Ser# always helps.Profile too.J

Did the OLD needle have a viton tip or was it solid metal?

Was the NEW needle the same?

If noth were solid metal, did you replace the rubber seat that the needle seals against?

The old needle had a rubber tip, i replaced it with one with a rubber tip. when i took the carb to the shop down the road they said everything looked fine and he adjusted the float a little, but its still pouring out fuel. I'm going to get a new float now, hopefully that works and i'll be on the water soon....

The serial # is 5318585...

I will post pics of it later when i get a chance.

Ok, so i just replaced the float, fuel isn't pouring out of the carb when primed now, but after it tries to start on choke it spits a bunch out and thats it. And it still doesn't run on much lower than half throttle. Any ideas? BTW i adjusted the idol to about a half turn out from lightly seated.

Check your compression and turn out idle 1 more turn then do final adjustment.
