Anyone ever done the loop from the Dania Cutoff Canal to the New River. I park my boat on the canal and was wondering if it was possible to do this loop.

Thank you

I used to live on the Dania Cutoff canal, Evin, but that was 20 years ago.

The west end of the DC canal was too silted in those days.

Evin...I live in this area an there is a connection that used to be navigable. Same as JB, its been 20 years since I went that way. The bridge at marina row on state road 84 is the cut that goes north and south between the South New River Fork and Dania Cut Off. You have to go west almost to 441 then make a right on a narrow canal that used to go thru the sticks(still does I think). YEARS ago (40+)that route was used by tour boats on the beach and in Hollywood to take tourist to a Seminole Indian crafts village between the South New River Fork and Dania Cut Off. Getting all the way to 441 is easy now, jus dunno about that little north/south canal anymore.

Re: Ft Lauderdale/Dania Cutoff canal

I did it earlier this year (and last year and the year before). I love that loop. I've even done it at night.

If you're a small outboard, the only tricky place is just south of the 595 bridge. There's a stretch of a hundred yards or so with white pipes to keep you in deep water, but it's not always clear which side of the pipe to be on. We idle thru that section, keeping a sharp eye on the sounder, otherwise just keep her in the middle. Even small outboards can be stopped at the railroad bridges - it appears they keep them open unless a train is coming so just wait if they're closed.

The only other concern is finding the connector between the Dania Cutoff and the New River. From the DCoC side it looks like you're turning off into the woods (and you are) before you get to the 441 bridge. From the New River side, it's the second left beyond Secret Woods Park (a wooded preserve on the south bank). At that left, you'll thread your way through a marina/yard, then under 2 sets if bridges (84 & 595), then into that stretch w/ the white pipes.

If you go to the link below, and click on Maiden Voyage, there's a paragraph or two about the 'loop'.

Drop me an 'e' if there's anything else you need.

Re: Ft Lauderdale/Dania Cutoff canal

Just completed the loop yesterday. Great time and alot easier than I thought. Nicks directions were dead on and simplfied the journey. Heading west on the Dania Cut off Canal, just under I-95, the turn for the loop is about 4 miles. Once the turn off the DCC is made its quite a secluded journey. Very peaceful. Except for a couple of paddlers, there was no one in sight for the journey over to the new river. Made for a great day, and I look forward heading in the direction in the future.

Yes I have. It is a little tedius at times but there's a pretty cool stretch where you don't see any buildings or structures. I was in a 21' bow rider. Not sure what the depth is.

When we do this loop we always stop at Boaters Park on the Dania Cutoff to grill up some lunch and we always have the whole place to ourselves.
