Frustrated...

I have a quick question about my 1992 200hp Evinrude XP outboard. I just completed putting on all the seals and hoses, along with replacing the power pack, plugs, and plug wires. My buddy and I set the timing the best we could, huge difference, and found that the engine really hauls *** in full throttle. But I have an issue that I want to address and get corrected if I can. I do have the OMC manual, but I'm kinda stuck here. My problem is this:

The boat idles fine, but once you put it in forward or reverse, going at a slow speed, the engine cuts off or acts like its going to cut off. I have to press in the choke in order for the engine to not cut off. I'm not sure if this is a fuel problem, maybe possibly a fuel pump or the fuel lines within the engine? Maybe a carb problem? Anyone have any ideas or where I can start to see what the problem is?

what are your idle rpms, in gear. you may have to set the idle up a little. i'm not sure what they should be. but a rule of thumb, is 650 -700 in gear, in the water. this must be done in the water, as there is not back pressure on the exhaust, on muffs. hitting the choke or primer, adds gas and picks up idle speed.

The V6 motors have a shift interrupt switch that grounds half the cylinders when you shift down to neutral, it is intended to assist in shifting by slowing down the engine. You have to either compensate for it or diasable it and there are problems with either method.

Go back one page to the threads list, find the "search this forum" link in the upper right hand part of the page, and search for "Shift Interrupt".

Compression OK?

If the compression is OK and pushing in the key to activate the fuel primer cures the issue, it's probably fuel related not ignition related. Most likely a fuel restriction in the carb or throttle body or an air leak in the carb or throttle body.

Any time we see an issue and the primer solves the problem we'll start with cleaning the carbs and throttle bodies. Then move on to sync-n-link issues. Then air leak issues.

Since the primer works the fuel pump is, most likely, OK. Chances are that if it's pumping fuel to the primer, it's pumping fuel to the carbs.

Now, that being said -- make sure you have the right spark plugs, Champions only, 87 octane and good oil. And never, ever run the motor under a load with the airbox cover off.
