Frustrated - Engine and Outdrive ID

I have a 1973 Slickcraft ss194.

My guess is that it has been repowered as it originally came with one of four engines, the max being a 225hp.

With a 23p aluminum prop, WOT 5200 rpm's = GPS 50-54mph
With a 17p aluminum prop, WOT 5200 rpm's = GPS 42mph

That isn't a typo with the rpm's.

After hours of looking for that little ID plate with the serial number, I found a casting stamp: 41 GM 3970010 which only tells me that it is a 350.

Today, I focused on the outdrive and was finally able to read what I thought was the serial number. Turns out it was just the serial number of the gimbal? housing.

After more research, I was convinced that it was an alpha one due to the "A" stamped on the prop shaft. I also found a website that said the serial number would be under the mercruiser sticker on the port side of the outdrive.

Finally - S/N L A432065 with a big D. More internet research = ???

Bond-o thought that I might have the wrong outdrive gear ratio.

To test that theory, I need to know what the original should be, and test by turning the engine over manually until the prop has completed one full rev.

Any help with identifying this outdrive?

its an R/MR/Alpha One drive for sure - not factory equipped in 1973 either, and slickcraft was known for using ford engines, not chevys

the only way to be absolutely sure of the gear ratio is to count the gear teeth, then look in the manual for the chart telling you which ratio it is

Ayuh,... You've got an Alpha 1... maybe an MR, but there Ain't allota difference..
Don will be able to cipher the serial #s for ya,...
'course, that don't mean somebody hasn't swapped in a different gear set...
You can pull the top cap, 'n count the gear teeth...
Or, pull the drive, 'n count shaft rotations...
It's probably a drive/ ratio from another motor, maybe a 6 cylinder...

I'm thinkin' that ole 350 has some other issue, holdin' it to 5200 rpms, which is 400 Too many, Anyways...

Re: Frustrated - Engine and Outdrive ID

Thanks Dubs & Bond-o.

I agree that 5200 rpms is way too high. The engine really purrs there though - well maybe "screams" is a better word. I usually only run 4600 when I am in a hurry, 4000-4200 when I actually roll out of bed on the first alarm.

My old boat was a 14' lonestar double hull fiberglass with a 15hp & a 4hp kicker. This slickcraft makes the 5-7 mile commute to the salmon a little quicker.
