Ha Guys can you all help me out? What am I doing wrong? It seems that the last two trips out my Water Pump does not work until it thaws Out. I always drain my motor of water after a day on the lake. I have be told to Dry Start the motor to blow out the water. I dont like doing this. I take my boat out at least once a week (Striper Fishing). The temp has been below 32 Degree's here.I just replaced the water pump this past fall. Oh by the way it is a (96) 70 hp Johnson. Thank for any help!! :)

Re: Frozen Water Pump

Hi Billy Stringer. <br />Running your motor dry is a big no/no. as little as 3 sec. time can damage your pump empeller and housing.I run year round and have for years. As long as your motor is in the down poition and the drain holes are clear you should have no problem. I suggest that You inspect your water pump, replace the empeller and test the thermostat(if it has one). I guess if you are really worried about freezing, it wouldn't hurt to rotate engine by hand(with the switch off and in the normal direction of rotaion only).Happy new year!

I agree w/ stinger, in the vertical the engine is "Self-Draining" but it may not hurt , if you have air available to blow it out at the tell-tail.
