Some may recall last year we had a 15yo (F) Japanese student here to stay for a couple of weeks.
My wife has become friendly with her mother, (who is trying to learn English).
They e-mail regularly.
They live 10km NE of Fukushima city, about 40km from the coast.
It seems to us they are smack-bang in the middle of the Nuclear crisis.
We can not make contact with them.
Mother has 3 children and 2 elderly parents (traditional Japanese)
Father lives-works in Tokyo, and returns for his days-off. Hopefully they have been able to move out to Tokyo with him.
We are in a position to be able to assist if they need it.
We do know:
they are not on the Red Cross missing list.
they are not in their home.
An acquaintance, Jo, in Tokyo, rings their telephone 2x per day. He says things are bad up there and they may be in a 'sanctuary' (as he calls it), and says not only damage from the earthquake, but little food, no power, overcrowding and freezing.
I really hope they got out to Dad in Tokyo.
Time will tell.
Cheers
Phillip
