Had friends using our boat last weekend. Despite instructions they filled our 1998 Yamaha 150 2 Stroke with gas and no oil! Apparently it ran for 5 minutes or so then stalled. They waited 15 minutes then started again and it stalled. Boat was then towed back to our dock. I have not been back to the lake to check damage but can anyone give me a probable condition/result of this as bad as that might be. Thanks

5min is pretty long without lubrication. you might be lucky.. (and if you are, the life expectancy of the powerhead has been reduced significantly)

other than that.. I agree with Rich Hargis... its hammered!! you should be looking into a long block powerhead or a new (used) outboard. because the costs are pretty close.

I have replaced powerheads in the past from Jasper. (i dont work for them, or anything) but I do know that they have a good product and the last time I checked.. they were kind-a specializing in the Yam'I powerheads in their Marine division.

let me tell you though.. before you go to the lake and test her out.. hook up and Use a remote tank. not the boat tank. the mixture has a long way to go through all the lines and the filter before getting to the motor (thats why you may be lucky).. but.. use the remote tank with a stronger than 50:1 mix. you should also open all the carb drains and pump the strong mix through the system until it runs out the float bowls. you need to flush out all the straight gas so you dont do an initial startup again without any oil.

give it a whirl and check your prices on a powerhead.

Is this a premix oil set up? If so how much fuel did they add to how much premix that was already in the tank?

or does it have the oil tanks and mix it's own oil to fuel?

And the most important question-- do these friends have the money to fix the motor?

Sounds like the motor got hot and the pistons got tight in the cylinders, but never really seized up. It's a pretty sure bet that your cylinders and pistons are scored from the lack of lubrication. A compression test on each cylinder can give you an idea about extent of damage. Good Luck!

before you commit to all the doom and gloom, simply mix a fresh batch of fuel/oil, (we are assuming it is a premix) make it a tad oily and give the motor a run, you have nothing to lose, remeber, unless the tank was 100% empty, there was some oil in there, all they did was dilute it.

Dump mystery oil in cylinders ASAP, then cross fingers and pray.

Pull plugs, turn over by hand, and see if it "feels" smooth.

Run a rich tank and see what happens.

You just might be able to squeeze another season out of it, or at least finish this one off.
