After installing a new 5.7 in my 20'Stingray with an Alfa One drive I installed a Seakamp Freshwater Cooling Kit 4821 full. The temp gauge reading before FWC was 140 to 145 at all rpms. The temp gauge reading now is 170 to 175. I know the new thermostat is 160 and the old one was 140 stock 1994. Is this new higher temp range ok? I was used to the 140.

Any given thermostat lets the engine run hotter than it is rated.Your new 160 therm opens at 160 and lets more water flow to cool the engine down.
During this change, the motor gains a few degees.

DHP

That's a nice Comfortable range........
Hotter is Better, To a Point......
190* is not Really Uncomfortable.....

The 140* on a Raw water system is to help with Salt retention in the block..... ;)

Re: FreshWater Cooling Temp

Install a 180 deg stat. That provides an ideal combustion chamber temperature. 140 and 160 are compromises to keep salt from plating out in the engine. Don't just take my word, ask any mechanic.

The other advantage, to your cooling system, is that you are now not allowing cold raw water to enter your engine as the thermostat opens and closes. The constant expanding and contracting of the cylinder walls accelerates wear.

I've run closed cooling for a number of years. My temp runs at a solid 180 deg. Never varies more that a couple of degrees, depending on load.

Re: FreshWater Cooling Temp

I was in hopes that Fresh Water Cooling was the way to go with my new motor. I run this boat all summer in the Mississippi river and dirty water in the motor did not seem like a good thing to have.

Re: FreshWater Cooling Temp

If she gets above 190 after running hard, start worrying. 175 is fine
