Last summer I installed a full fresh water cooling system on my 1996 5.0 alpha, 50 hours on engine. Flushed the engine several thimes
My problem is it will run hot on plane as soon as you slow down or stay under 2800 rpm it runs fine. I even changed the system to a half system to fix things,no help.
Could it be there is not enough raw water flow from the alpha drive to cool things down.
I am thinking of installing a engine driven raw water pump to increase flow. Do I feed this pump from the drive unit or through the hull.
This way I will have two water inlets that will provide all the raw water I need
I could use any help anyone may have
Thanks Phill

Re: Fresh Water Cooling

I've had boats that ran full systems with just the Alpha pump. It depends a lot on the water temperature. If you are running in 60° or less water temp and you are overheating, then you have something else wrong. Have you put in a new impeller in the drive. Being a 96, it's way overdue if you haven't. Might also check the water hose from the drive to the transom shield.
