i have acquired an old outboard 7.5 hp with forward and reverse gears it was stored upside down for about 9 months and is locked up. i have removed the spark plugs and added lube to free up the pistons and have been able to get it to move enough that when i put my finger over the spark plug hole i can feel compression however it still will not turn freely.i have noticed it will go into forward and nuetral but not reverse so im thinking it is a lower end issue more than an upper i am hoping someone has experience with this issue and can ofer some advice on how i should proceed. i know the motor was able to run and go into all gears prior to being stored upside down. also i posted here as i was not sure which forum to post in if this is the wrong one my apologies and please direct me to the proper forum. Thank you

Take off the lower unit. If it frees up the powerhead, then you know the problem is in the lower unit and go from there.

thanks whaler was leaning toward that idea but was unsure if there was a easier way i did not know about. Bond-o i am unsure of the make as it has been painted several times and i am still slowly working my way down to any info hidden below the layers of paint

Have you changed the Oil in the Lower Gear Housing.
It may be molasses by now!

A picture would help. :D

Also there maybe a Model/Serial plate riveted to the Diveshaft housing in the vicinity of the Transom Mount.

I'm all about dropping the lower unit as well. You'll quickly figure out what is frozen, either the powerhead or the lower unit. Also, to figure out what motor it is....either post a picture and someone on here will know, or take a mental picture and cruise the internet looking at motors from that era. If you think it's from the 1960s then type in 1960s Johnson, 1960s Evinrude, 1960s etc...... Make sure that you are looking at pictures, not web links. You'll quickly start seeing motors that look similar (by manufacturer) and then can zero in on the exact year.
