My brother in law is not exactly the king of maintenance, and has had this KMV for a few years now. It has been rode semi-hard and put up wet every time he’s used it. Never winterized properly etc etc. He probably never lubed the engine or steering cable in 3-4 years, so now it is seized (no surprise there), and he decided that it is no longer something he wants to look at, and gave the boat to me. He wouldn’t take any money for it.

I know a little about KMV and the hull design. There is not a lot of info out there, but everything I’ve found says they are a solid boat, and although a bit odd looking, the hull is apparently everything it is claimed to be... stable at rest and under displacement speeds, and also quick and easy to plane when you want to go fast. Apparently they turn a little different than a standard deep vee, but that is to be expected. The “Norwegian Boston Whaler” is a term I’ve seen coined a couple of places. Time will tell.

I’m conveniently doing some work on an Airstream trailer (my business) for the owner of our local Grady White and Thunderjet dealer, who is also a Mercury dealer. He is going to give the 80 hp a go over today and see if it’s a contender for a season or two of use, or if it’s DOA. I will likely re-power at some point, but I’d like to get some time on the hull to see if it’s what I want for the longer term. The work trade thing will pay off here...

Photos below of the new toy as I got it. If anyone has any knowledge of these boats, I’d love to hear it.

And a few after cleaning up the teak etc. Linseed oil will be coming soon to brighten it up. It also came with an 8 hp Suzuki kicker that is a good runner. Furuno and Garmin electronics too.

I just bought one of these boats! How did the restoration go?

Also did yours have the capacity/compliance plate in tact?

Cheers,

TC
