I acquired a 19ft. boat with 1978 evinrude 175Hp. Free is the good news.

Bad news, no revese, tried adjusting by powerhead, still nothing. Lower unit with green creamy lube, no chunks or metal seen. Starts well runs good until stop then wont go back in gear. If "played" with will lock into forward and won't come out. Puts around on seemingly 2 of the 6 cylinders.

Compression is averaged at 75 cold. don't trust it on the water to try it warm. One of the six is 50.

Where to start???

Start with major decarbonivation to raise the compression before you get into the lower end. $5 and a bit of time.

if you can pull the heads inspect the carbon build up I can pull mine in about 5 minutes youll need new head gasket piston rings could be bad but check for carbon build up first and de carb than check compression again check plugs if you have to pull he heads youll know right away if your gakets are any good

I was just wondering if your boat is a Steury? If so what year? I have a 1979 17' and would like to find a little bit bigger Steury.

Sorry to say this but there isn't such a thing as a "free" boat. You'll pay for it over time.

Yea, I'm not good with online names obviously. 19.6 ft steury 1977 I believe. I love the hull, planes well, and handels great. Just need to get the thing running and back it the water before the wife nixes it.

Maybe not free, but for now it is cheaper then the 17-23,000 dollars I'd spend for a new one.

Steury

Did as suggested, pulled heads. Cleaned carbon with NAPA decarbonizer, pistons and rings look OK.

Found a lot of rock, sand, and dirt in the water passageways. Obviously been in the dirt sometime. Anyone recomend how to clean this out the best.

Thanks Steury

Re: Free boat, problems galore!!!

UPDATE::::

Spent the last month and a half rebuilding lower unit. Hydroassist shifting plunger screw broke, gears worn, and propeller shaft worn around reverse gear. These and bearings, seals, and gaskets replaced.

Took off head, cleaned water passageways, replaced directional gromets, and cleaned mating surfaces with new gaskets.

Hoping to be on the water for the big Labor Day Weekend. :D

Anyone have any further suggestions before I take the plunge.

And thanks one and all for the professional and effcient help.

Steury
Carl :p

Re: Free boat, problems galore!!!

Thanks fouledplug. I didn't make it out over the great end of summer holiday :( . But still plan on going next weekend. Anyway, haven't got a new compression check since the new head gaskets were put in, and decarbonization. That is on my list and will be done this coming weekend. Thanks for the input.

Steury
