I know by lurking on here :) that most of you like the Cobalts, so I figured I would go ahead and post my new 89 172 Condurre Cobalt with a 205 merc. It's my first boat and it's in near mint condition. Since it was free I won't ask if I got a good deal on it :D!!!
We have been around this boat for 5 years now and all I can say is everything they say about Cobalt is true. This boat blows the doors(not talking speed) off most boats made even today.
Almost forgot 220 hours on it.

Really sharp looking boat however all you've done is skip the purchase step, but prepared for all the rest that follows and that's why there is no such thing as a "Free Boat" ...good luck and welcome!

Welcome. Very very nice boat but I think you may have paid a little too much for it though........

I just got a '76 Cobalt (330 hours) and am more than pleased and impressed with the boat. I paid $1200 for mine and think I got a heck of a deal. Good for you getting yours for free. Search "Cobalt" in the forums---I had posted a question about general info, history on the company and boats ----there were some interesting responses I think you would enjoy reading. I think the title of the post was something like " '76 Cobalt ". Your screen name should be "Freebie"

Welcome aboard iboats!!

You mentioned the fact you have been around this boat for 5 years; was it in your family? It is always great if you can ask someone about the history of the boat, especially when you are working on something in particular.

On the I/Os it is imperative that you keep an eye on the bellows and replace them when they look suspicious in any way.

Congrats on the "new" ride!!!

Re: Free 1989 Cobalt

Thanks everyone! How was it free? Well my dad is retiring to Idaho from So. Cal. and he's getting a new boat up there. So, with our 5 month old he figured we would have a blast with it(and we will:D ).

If I was still 20 years old instead of 36, then I would agree with you guys on not knowing what the yearly cost will be(well actually if I was still 20 I'd be to stupid to agree with you all:D ). Isn't it amazing how our parents actually knew what they were talking about when we were teenagers, I for one always thought they were talking out their rear:eek: . The older I get the smarter they appear, must have something to do with using those 2 big things on the side of my head called ears!

To tashasdaddy: Boat is in sweet condition and well taken care of so initial outlay may be zero, but your right, many thousands will be going down a very deep hole in the foreseeable future.

To Gary H NC: How's that sweet deal for $1100 you picked up on ebay doing? Maybe I wont lurk so much now, lol.

To Boatin Bob: Thanks Bob, still can't believe it's 18 years old.

To jmoorepghpa: Thanks for the info I will definitely search for that info.

To studlymandingo: I've read a lot on here so far but can't say as I know what the bellows are yet, little help please:)

To Scout Sport Fish: Ok that was just funny:D

To QC: Hey, I'll wave as I pass you one of these days on Mead! J/K :D

Thanks again guys I look forward to learning a lot on here.

Sorry but I have to post a Picture of our little girl, she's 4.5 months in this picture.

Vegas / QC I'll assume that you both boat on the Vegas end of Mead. I'm on the other end at Meadvew. How are the ramps there? They are dredging our ramp at South Cove. The lake keeps on droping.

Re: Free 1989 Cobalt

Bucky,

We usually launch at Lake Mead Marina, but we go everywhere. I didn't make it to South Cove last year, but I did the year before. We start almost every day with a plan to head to Mushroom Reef if the weather allows, wich is most the way to Temple Bar, so we definitely get around . . .

vegas-storms,

Cute she is, but she better get daddy in gear if he thinks he's gonna pass me . . . :p :p :D

Re: Free 1989 Cobalt

Just doing a little dreaming QC :D, Took the wife and 18 years to get around to having a kid, but damn if she's not the sweetest thing I've ever seen. Well minus her mom of course(just incase she's lurking:D )

Almost forgot! QC can you recommend any good maintence repair facilities here in town, preferably near 89052/Anthem area, but I'll take any good ones you know of!

Hi Bucky, yes I will also be out of the Vegas end Bucky, but I have not got the boat out yet:eek: . Just no time for a couple of weeks. So not sure but I'll let you know.

Bucky and/or QC, it's been a couple of years since I've been on the lake how much more do I have to worry about under water obstacles? Are the authorities marking it as the lake moves further down? I seem to have gotten overly paranoid since little one was born(drives me crazy!)

Couple of questions for everyone, the boat was always up at Big Bear Lake, Ca elevation roughly 6500' and the boat always seemed to be quit fast up there. Will I be able to notice the HP difference coming down 4500' in elevation? Also, I don't remember dad ever putting this thing WOT, anyone care to guess on the maximum speed(17'2 2500lbs 4.3L 175 merc, sorry made a booboo on original post, thought it was the 205 merc)? I probably won't push it that hard either but sure would be nice to know:D !!!

The other question is my tow vehicle. 2005 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 sport rated at 5000lbs unless I get the weight distributing hitch, then it's 6700lbs. I figure boat 2500lbs, trailer 750lbs(just guessing), fuel, misc to be about 800lbs so a total somewhere just north of 4000lbs. just want to make sure I'm not missing something, if calculations are close then I would assume I'm pretty safe with the out the weight distribution bar.

Thanks for help guys!

Re: Free 1989 Cobalt

my question would be does the trailer have brakes. if not have the installed. either hydrolic, or electric. travel flat areas hydrolic, hilly, mountainous, elecric. i now have brakes, as i got tired of being push thru quick changing traffic lights. you now have a presious cargo.

Re: Free 1989 Cobalt

i lived in vegas if that boat is a 17' and you got a 4 runner you could do without breaks as i got a 19' w/ v-8 and thats alot heavier. but i am sure if you really want to you can convert it to brakes. also that boat will have plenty of speed for you v-6..nice boat good luck..boy its hot their in summer. i was their in july . dry heat m/ a--. my buddy lives in truckee near reno. alot nicer because at night it cooler. if you got the$$$ brakes are nice

Re: Free 1989 Cobalt

Can't seem to find this information on the nevada DMV or DOT site, does anyone know if I have to have brakes in Nevada. If so what the Min. trailer weight would be for having them. Trailer says 3076 pounds gross weight. Thanks.
