Hopefully, the telltales loop up over the powerhead before exiting at the cowl. You want the block to completely fill with water before the telltale starts working. Of more concern with two of them.

Aw man ... yer no fun. Yeah ... I confess, it's only a tee in the line. But the 'bosses' were already cast into the pan & I just couldn't resist using them?

Note the '77 has them but as you know doesn't use either. See pic. They are NOT tapped by the factory btw. '78 has em too but uses a hole drilled in the pan instead. With that snap-in self hose-clamping fitting thingy. I believe they disappeared around '81?

'77 115 block. Scalloped, ported. Scalloped teflon coated pistons. Balanced rotating assy. Exhaust reworked. Big carbs big jets.

'77 mid w/true 'megaphone' tuner. (Only year they did that btw.)

Motor is a bastard. Parts from '75 thru '92.

'78 hi comp heads milled 010.

'92 single powerpack ignition/flywheel.

Interesting I have 82 140 Johnson I have been wanting to build.
and a 70s 135 evinrude that should be a runner according to previous owner good projects for the future. I'd like to find more sources on building high hp out of v4 johnyrudes

What kind of speed are you getting?
guessing at what you have ended up with is a tweaked 140 ?
how does this build compare to other v4s you have had ?
can you steer me in the right direction for how tos or where to find what parts to use?

In a nutshell ...

Rebuilt several V4 Xflows but this is the most "radical" I've done. Far as sawing on the block and pistons and ports that is.

Time will tell if'n it was worth it. All 'pends on how long she stays running?

The off-idle and mid range acceleration is breathtaking. Top end improvement a lil but not so much. Guess it's like the old saying, "Ain't no replacement for displacement."

But it's certainly breathing easier. Judging by the atrocious fuel consumption. That and it sounds really cool ...

Don't think this worked last time so trying again:

Your '82 should already have the hi comp heads, reed stuffers, bubble butt exhaust, etc.

Believe it's the '73 135 posed to be a bad azz. But keep in mind you can't mount that powerhead on a mid newer than '76.

I'd focus on the '82. It already has most of the good stuff

So mill the heads to the point of what gas you can afford lol
port and polish intake and exhaust sides port match intake and mid section of exhaust and gaskets.
can also port and polish carbs .
performance reed valves?
what about intake? Any good way to open it and bring in cold air rather than hot air?
which ignition system is the best?
which is the best place to open exhaust in mid section? ( this should make one idle different than having to push through the water right?)

I'm told you shouldn't go much past 020 with these heads. Yes, Chris Carson reeds. I used a '78 intake because it's an inch taller than '77. For the 'hi rise' effect but mainly because it has the integral fuel pump mount and mounts for the updated linkage. Also has fittings for the fuel recirc lines that run to the inspection covers.

Some guys cut vents into the cowl but not sure that's necessary. After runnin it for awhile early on we pulled the cover off and there was ice cold condensation on the intake behind the carbs. So I think it's gettin enough air ...?

Ignition? I prefer CD4 cuz there's fewer pieces/less clutter. And it's all 'plug n play'. Plus the CDI stuff isn't rev limited.

'77 is the best factory tuner but people do cut down other models. The one pictured is an '86. They cut em off to about 8" long. Note: Do NOT cut the water tube ... Heh heh heh. Holes in mid are drilled just below the tuner.

Here's what I meant about "scalloping":

Balanced from the crank up. Piston & rod assys weigh 1220 grams each. 1200 is posed to be some kinda magic number but I wasn't comfortable sawing any more material off. So I'm a lil heavy ...

Here's a vid with a stock '83 (crank rated) 140 for comparison. She's a lil louder & quicker outa the hole now ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lqat6iRbpRo

Far as being "loud". At WOT I don't think it's all that much louder now than it was then. My theory is it's kinda like having a ventilated prop. Yes the holes allow exhaust to escape initially. Til you reach a certain rpm or speed. But after that they go with the original flow?

Ice cold on the intake below carbs makes me wonder what fuel your running like alcohol maybe?

Nope. Just pump 'premium'. The alcohol is for the crew. Provided they behave themselves ...
