Hi, this is my first time posting something, I got this boat 4 years ago, and this summer I got my first problem with the starter, I am using lots of tricks to start the boat, however I don't know if I will need a new starter. Also, I have been paying 200 dollars everytime I winterize the boat plus 200 dollars to summerize?, I am wondering if I somebody can explain me step by step what do I need to winterize and how to winterize my boat. I will really appreciate if somebody can help me. Thank You!
I am in Lake Huron, Forest, Ontario

Re: Four winns fling 1995

there are several people on the forum that have Flings. it is an unusual set up. as it was a joint venture with 4winns and OMC. it basicly has an outboard motor set up with the jet drive. these are the only boats that ever used this set up.

what are your starter problems, as it is basically a johnson/evinrude 115hp outboard power head.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

I also have a '95 jet boat -- mine's from Sea Ray and uses a Merc SportJet 90 (as TD said, basically an OB powerhead). For some reason I thought some Flings also used the Merc, but don't know for sure.

Do you have a copy of the owner's manual and/or service manual? That would be a wise investment for you. You can also join jetboat14.com where everyone has a similar boat, and someone may be willing to let you borrow their service manual.

Winterizing a small jetboat is much easier than most other boats. Here's what I have to do:

1) Make sure you've got sufficient Stabil in your fuel tank, topped off. Run the boat enough to make sure it's well mixed and through the carburetors.

2) Open the engine hatch and remove the covers in front of each cylinder's carburetor. Turn off the fuel valve. When the engine begins to starve for fuel, spray fogging oil into each cylinder. This will effectively kill the engine.

3) Pull the boat for the season. I usually remove the top of the water-cool hose to make sure all the water is drained from the engine.

4) Many manuals also recommend you remove each spark plug and squirt a small amount of oil in each cylinder, then turn the engine over a couple times to distribute that oil (don't let it start).

5) It's a good idea to change / check the drive lube -- mine has a drain and bleed screw on the bottom intake grate, and also lube for the jet (I need to remove the jet nozzle etc from the back end to do this). Make sure you torque everything properly, so either borrow or invest in a torque wrench, or hire it done for approx $65.

6) Make sure the boat's clean, and put it away for the winter. I store ours in the garage at our cottage. Unheated all winter, but it's dry and protected. So I prop open all the hatches to let everything dry and stay that way. Some guys on this group recommend dryer sheets or something is you've got rodent problems.

7) Pull the battery and store indoors (heated) for the winter. Put it on a board or piece of carpet so it's not resting on bare concrete.

8) There's a current discussion thread on whether or not to block your trailer up so the weight is off the wheels and springs. Check out that thread and make your own decision.

Re: Winterizing a Four Winns Fling

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The procedure to winterize is first to start the engine after adding fuel stabilizer to the remaining fuel then to "Fog" the engine thru the carbs with a can of "Fogging Oil" while running.

Once completed the best bet is to drain the cooling system.
1994 and early 1995 models (90JEER, 115JEER and 90JEEO, 115JEEO models) have only one petcock and an additional hose which MUST be removed from a drain nipple per the owners manual and/or service manual.

Mid-year 1995 and later models (115TJEO, 115TJED, 115TJEU models) have 2 petcocks which must be drained per the owners manual and/or service manual.

Some folks have fixed up a bucket of anti-freeze and a bilge pump to pump it into the cooling system using the flushing device kit #437021.
It can work if you get it down pat but there are no written instructions on how to do this as far as we know.
