for those of you ,s that have read my previous posts on my 1963 75 elecct shift starflite you know that on its madien test run she failed about a 1000 yards from shore.basically shuddered and stopped running and would not start again .well she has been replaced with a great running 1966 electamatic 80 hp johnson so i have decided to tear apart the 63 for parts.heres what i found when i took the lower unit off.just below the splined end it looks like it was machined clean off!the shaft that is .i will assume the rest is in the bottom of the motor.what would cause this to happen ?a failed bearing?

A bent gearcase. Pretty common because it is so skinny. Because of the bend, the shaft is forced to flex each time it rotates, till it breaks.

-----OR-----an electrical problem that put the gears in forward and reverse at the same time. When that happens, something is going to bust.

most likely FR your elect theory as i did have some poping out issues right at the start of the test.actually now that you mention it the wires look sort of burnt at the gearcase.i thought it was just old age but now that i look closely it does look like they maybe shorted.do you think the solinoides would still be ok for spares or toast.
