Evening Gentlemen....

I put a deposit today on an 89 Cadorette Holiday 200 with a 4.3 L Merc. Some of you know I normally hang out in the Johnny/Rude forum, as I usually have outboards, but this is my first I/O and would like a little advice from some of you more experienced guys. Offer is based on the compression test that I still have to do next weekend, as I forgot my gauge, but I did get a chance to water test her. She cut through the water nice, and ran around 4500 RPM roughly at WOT at 30 mph. Does that sound about right? Do you guys normally run fuel additives, such as Seafoam, or I have some leftover BRP Carbon Guard, I assume that these are ok to put in?? What plugs will this Merc take? The PO had not tuned it last summer, so plan on changing lu oil, new plugs, cap and rotor, and impeller. Does this have points and condensor? I believe the drive was rebuilt a couple years. Any other advice or comments? Ty to all in advance.

Re: found one

My suggestion would be to treat it like nothing has ever been done to it.
One problem you will run up against is the ujoint bellows, gimbal bearings, ujoints etc. that outboards just don't have.
I would strongly suggest you at least read and do what is in the How to winterize post and the How to Summerize post for the basic year to year maintenance.
After that, you will probably have some different questions.
There are also things like OEM service manual for the drive, that is at this link.

You don't have points, you have a Thunderbolt IV ignition system. You will need the OEM service manual for your engine, it's not online.

Might want to do some iboats searches for manifolds & risers, bellows, shift cables etc.
Welcome to the DARK SIDE

Also, are fuel additives/decarbing as important with the I/O's as they are with the 2 stroke outboards? I have a few leftover cans of both Seafoam and BRP's Carbon Guard. Are these ok to use in the crankcase and/or mixed with the fuel? Tks again.

They aren't as necessary as in outboards, unless they get a lot of idle time and few tuneups. Use them they can't hurt anything. But a well tuned and maintained marine IO engine shouldn't need them. The owners might, but the engine doesn't.

I like the quote. So true is so many ways. A placebo for the owners.

Tks again, Im sure we will talk again. I got a manual, as I have reccomended so many times myself.
