I have replaced my spark plugs in the middle of the season on my 6-hpEvinrude.kicker with a plug that has a design in which I'm unfamiliar with. The plug has no electrode like conventional plugs. I am having a problem with them fouling out. Does this style burn as hot or efficient as the other? And if not what can you do to help prevent this excess carbon build-up, other than running at higher speeds. I't was suggested to switch to a NGK plug can anyone reinforce that suggestion? Thanks for all!

Re: Fouled Out

If you're referring to a perma gap (looks like someone filed the end flat) I feel your pain. I HATE em. Too unforgiving. When you pull em out you can see an oil stain from centre electrode to ground just from sitting. Maybe its just me....LOL

now that I got that out of my system....

>what mixture are you running?
>what oil?
>are you using the OEM recommended plug?
>how does it idle?
>does it smoke at idle?
>does it have an adjustable idle mixture screw?

Re: Fouled Out

Schematic,
Gas mixture is standard 50/1 w/Unleaded Octaine, Oil Type was a Penzoil,It purred like a kitten until it became fouled(of course)Idle mixture I had been playing with that all summer long to best acheive a correct setting. Adjusted to factory speck at 1-1/2 turns out and fine tuned from there. But it always seemed to run very rich to the point of excessive gas fumes from exhaust at trolling speeds. Not an over amount of visual smoke! I have recently obtained this kicker and havn't put to many hours on it since I've owned it. I remember the seller told me he used to ad a lead mixture to the mix, which if I'm correct would increase the Octaine (Yes?) Plugs were selected from recommended chart(Champion)
T-290

Re: Fouled Out

The lead in leaded gas was used to raise octane (which you don't need) and lubricate valve seats (you don't have any) so sounds like the PO wasted his cash on that one. You have nothing to lose from trying the NGK's, and you can see if your fouling persists with different plugs. If you use your motor for trolling only, you may be able to get away with a higher heat range, but the plug has two functions: light the A/F mixture and help pull heat from the combustion chamber, so a hotter plug and high RPM's might not be a good idea. You didn't mention what plugs you replaced, and if you'd had fouling problems with those...

Re: Fouled Out

FP,
The plugs that I replaced were also Champs. Would you consider the possibility of the mixture seat and/or screw were worn to the point of not being able to achieve a correct setting or am I reaching here? And as far as trying to clean out the excess carbon what's my best bet?
T-290

Re: Fouled Out

Schematic,
Is there a way to adjust the mixture by listening for a hightend or lower RPM ? Is it possible to adjust it too lean! If so how would you determine it, other than looking at the plugs? Because it is a 2 -cycle and has no valves what would be the end result in running to lean? Burn up the pistons?
T-290
