The forward/reverse lever on my 1996 wave runner(3 seater) does not totally work. While idling you can put it in reverse, but it will not return to forward. When the engine is off the lever moves from forward to reverse easliy.I talked to parts person at a dealer and he suggested that the bushings were worn. He sent me a diagram of f/r mechanism but I could not figure out which bushings he may have been talking about. Another technician told me that there was an adjustment on the cable but i have never been able to see how it could be adjusted. It is funny how the lever works just fine when the engine is off, but will only go into reverse and to get it back in forward you have to turn engine off. Does anyone know how this can be remedied without taking in to a shop. I live a long way from a dealer. Thanks.

Re: Forward/reverse 1996 yamaha

the force of the water is moving the hood and making it stick ,the bushings will be where the bolts are that it pivots up and down on like the bolts where the nozzle pivots side to side find where the hood is bolted and remove the bolts , look for a bushing that goes between the bolt and the hood casting. it could also be the steering nozzle with worn bushings and the water is moving it in to the reverse hood and locking the hood, try moving the nozzle in and out with your hand if it clunks back and forth it has a problem and could be the culprit
