Forward or Reverse?

I was attempting to remove the outdrive from the boat. The manual said for LH rotation engines I should shift the drive into reverse, so I did.
I removed everything, 6 nuts, speedo conn., trim cylinders aft of the drive, etc..
The drive would come out 3 inches and stop, it wouldn't budge after that. I was running out of daylight and had to get the boat back in the garage, so I pushed the drive back in to meet the gimbal housing, reconnected the trim cylinders, left the 6 nuts off and shifted into neutral.
When I shifted into neutral I heard a clunk and had to hold back the vomit.
When I got back around to the back of the boat, the outdrive had come out just to the end of the studs. I removed the trim cylinders and the drive came off no problem.

So the questions are: Should I have been in forward gear? Did I damage anything?

thanks a lot for the info!
I love this forum.

Re: Forward or Reverse?

Your engine and drive are standard rotation, so dunno why you were following reverse rotation instructions...
It should have been in Forward.

Yea, you should have been in fwd.
Yea, you probably damaged something.
The manual said for LH rotation engines I should shift the drive into reverse, so I did.

The manual doesn't say that. At least the OEM manual doesn't. All the OEM manual says it "Put it in Forward Gear for STANDARD ROTATION."

Look at the shift shafts in the drive and the bellhousing. One of them had to bend in order to seperate.
