Forward/neutral/reverse switch???

I have a 1972 50hp Johnson w/ hydro-electric shift. The Forward/neutral/reverse switch is broken. I bought a Johnson hydro-electric control box and cables.
The old switch had 5 wires: purple, blue, green, (2) whites
The one I just got has 3 wires:purple, blue, green
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can wire this up and/or what the two white wires were for??
one of them went out from the control switch to the ignition switch. I am assuming this was for the safety switch for neutral??
Is there a way to get around this? or to just by-pass the f/n/r switch completely?
Thanks for any input I can get!

Re: Forward/neutral/reverse switch???

You can just use the purple, blue and green wires and connect the two white ones together. But you lose the start-in-neutral-only feature. For safety, you really should install a safety switch on the throttle back at the motor. That is the way the earlier motors were.

Re: Forward/neutral/reverse switch???

Thanks ! I had read on a old thread 2001/2002 about a guy using a three way switch he mounted to the dash to replace this switch. Would this be a safer alternative? If so any idea how to wire up the switch?

Re: Forward/neutral/reverse switch???

you are best to use the switch you have. i have taken the 2 white wire, and spliced them to extend them, and just put a push button, like a horn button, to make contact, this reminds you to put it in neutral. you have to hold the button and turn the key to start. without holding the button, the starter will not engage.

just connect a white wire to each side.

hey I have the same problem. I have finally just figured it out:D I know these parts are hard to come by and I know i could wire up a three way but if I can find a switch I'd rather opt for that. If any of you could help me find one it would be much appreciated! Thank you, Dazed and Confused

watch ebay, you may have to buy a complete control, and who knows if the switch is good.

If you want to use a three way switch instead of the control box, how does it connect?

This will do it, but I am NOT suggesting you do it. Safety reasons, y'know.

HYDRO-ELECTRIC drive only, 1972 and pre-1972
