For as long as I have been a member of this forum, a reoccurring issue keeps appearing, that of the location of the member posting a thread. So many of the answers to questions presented require location to determine what weather patterns a boat is subjected to, price of boat, available parts, dealers, suppliers in the area, etc., etc. It has been suggested in the past that location (approximate area) be mandatory information in each members profile. Personally, I don't consider doing this to be a problem.
So, my question is, What is your reason for not letting other members know approximately where you are posting from?

Re: Forum Member's Location

I thought about being specific and tell people that my location is "in my living room at my computer with a cup of coffee" but that seemed to be too detailed so I just put in my town and state ;)

I agree with you location is very important............... however........ people are secretive and lazy

Re: Forum Member's Location

Yeah, I think Google has a picture of SF in his skivvies thumbing his nose at the camera car.

Seriously, I think a lot of folks get a little paranoid about revealing their location. It's the times we live in. About 10 years ago, I signed up on jeepsunlimited (you on there Jeep Man?) and gave my home town location. I was more or less stalked by another member who lived about one town away from me. Numerous pms, the content of which told me that I DID NOT WANT TO KNOW THIS GUY! I didn't respond and he eventually left me alone.

So, when I joined up here about 9 years ago I decided not to give my location initially. About 3 years later I decided what the heck and it's never been a problem here. Wouldn't matter to me anyway anymore because I guess I've toughened up or whatever. That's part of it.

The other thing is, while most sites require registration to post, most folks who sign up meet the mimimum requirements to save time, even if not paranoid.

I finally added my location to my profile because I read so many posts where I said to myself, "I might be able to help this guy if I knew where he was." Yes, it would be nice if everybody gave their location, even just a state would be helpful in most cases.

Let that be a lesson, Jeep Man. NEVER ask a Kentuckian where he's from. Unless you've just started your 3rd mint julep and don't really care anymore.

Re: Forum Member's Location

I've got a VERY general location marked down, but I mention my city from time to time in threads. I like a little safety buffer in public. I guess I've seen too many scam artists (I grew up in Detroit), and I know they're down here too.

But I agree - at least a general location is very helpful sometimes. I know it's one of the first things I look for in many posts.

Re: Forum Member's Location

The reasons for both sides of the coin make perfect sense. It just comes down to personal preferance, and what matters to you.

The location in my profile is specific enough for any questions to be answered with accuracy, and general enough to prevent my house from ever being TP'd!!! Some don't care either way...

Re: Forum Member's Location

i have asked this question many times.

in other fourms......it may be bad to post location......
but as you all well know.....even middle Tennessee.....or southwest georgia........this tells us a whole lot here....

i see nothing wrong with very general locations....it cannot affect the privacy of the poster. and gives us the basic info we need.

but lately....as more and more people are coming aboard.....the carry on from other forums spills over here, and the new posters think its still trouble for them.

arrrrgh

I just picked Talladega Alabama because it was the first exotic place that popped into my head.

I'm really located in Tierra del Fuego.

Nobody would know the name of my town. So "Northern Bay Area" puts me North of San Francisco out in California. Yes I know there are other "Bays" in the world. lol

I'll tell him, but he has a cottage on Herrington, so I don't think he will go anywhere else.

Re: Forum Member's Location

I like the location I put down. If you wish to come visit my town,,,,,come on but bring your boat. All that is there now is some foundations covered by water and a bridge going over the water. The village was dismantaled, houses moved to make way for the lake that was put in for the Muskingum Watershed. It is still located on some maps and carrys the name.
