i have a 1978 mercury 800 series. It only fires on the forth cylindar when the motor gets warm. i was wondering if this could be a stater problem or maybe the coil pack. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Check the ground on the #4 coil.

As for the stator, it will not be the problem. The stator will knock out 2 or 4 cyl's. Not just one.

Also it could be the switchbox...as it heats up what ever is causing the problem might expand from the heat and make contact inside the switchbox, thus making the bottom cyl fire.

TMD

Thanks for your help I was also wonddering if I could move one coil from another cylindar and move the forth pack to which everone i moved to see if it would make that cylindar not fire like the forth. I will check the ground and switch box and get back to you with any new info. Again thanks for your help.

Irish

Yes, you can move the coils around.

Just make sure the wiring stays the same.

TMD

Re: forth cylindar wont fire untill warm

i have a little more info about the motor. After the motor warms up and the forth cylindar fires it will fire for the rest of the day. No matter how long the motor has has been shut down. unfortunatly i was unable to move the coil pack today because the co-owner of the boat took it out. I will check that tomarrow. I think more and more after the info that you have givin me tha it might be the switch box. hopefully things will be confirmed tomarrow. any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Irish
